STANFORD/WOODEN-FAMILY LINE

STANFORD/WOODEN/BRIDGFORTH-DAY
David Stanford
died 99 years ago today in 1912 at age 74.  Old Dave must have be a piece of work.  He is the boys' 3rd great-grandfather.  He was married three times:  Amanda Jane Kenley from Feb 24, 1859 to her death December 18, 1863 then Amanda's sister Nancy Ann Kenley from Feb 27, 1865 to her death Oct 26, 1888.  She was our great-grandmother and the mother of Margaret Jennie Stanford who married Joseph R. Wooden.  Then David married Cynthia A. Pearl January 14, 1890 who actually out lived him. David begot a total of 16 children, 3, 13 and 0. I don't know who the other 3 were with Nancy, I only show 10.

"David Stanford passed to his reward on the evening of May 30th, Memorial Day, having experienced seventy-five years of Earth's joys and sorrows.

Mr. Stanford was a native of Indiana but had resided most of his life in Illinois, and for about thirty years had lived in Douglas County.  He was a farmer until 1892, in which year he engaged in mercantile pursuits in Old Villa Grove, which occupation followed until advancing years compelled him to retire from active life.

Mr. Stanford was married three times and was the father of sixteen children, his first wife being the mother of of three and his second wife, thirteen.  Five of the latter are now mourning the loss of their father, Mrs. Jennie Woodson (sic-Wooden) and Mrs. Katherine Wishard, of Appleton City, Missouri, Mrs. Dora (sic-Cora) Bryan of Champaign, Illinois, and William Stanford and Mrs. Bertha Anderson of this city.  His aged and faithful wife is also left behind together with four brothers and four sisters (there were 12 children in his parents family) and a number of their relatives and friends.

During the war of the rebellion (civil war), Mr. Stanford served in the 36th Illinois Infantry, from which he was honorably discharged at the close of the hostilities.

In the year 1868 the subject of this sketch became a member of the Christian Church, and it was under the auspices of that organization that his remains were taken to their last resting place on Sunday, June 2, 1912.  The services were held in the Christian church. Rev. C.H. Soriven officiating, before a large concourse of mourning relatives and sympathizing friends.

Mr. Stanford will be missed in Villa Grove.  He was a man of sterling worth, he had firm convictions and the courage to live them."(read - he was hard to get along with)
